Basketball IQ: Do You Have It Or Not?

“It was as if he could see three steps ahead of everyone else… While they were waiting for the play to happen, he was planning the next one.”

- Bill Walton on NBA Legend Larry Bird

It was driving me crazy…

My coach kept yelling from the bench “hit the cutter!” and “split the gap!” but I had no idea what he was talking about.

What gap? What cutter?

Am I the only one who doesn’t see ANY of this???

My teammates didn’t seem to have any problem with the offensive sets, or making the right plays… Heck, my coach always seemed to be congratulating them and doing them favours.

In fact, one of my friends on the team (who I know for a FACT never trained in the offseason) was out there making plays like he had eyes in the back of his head… It was like he could just THINK on a totally different level than all the players out there.

It wasn’t much of a surprise when he was named the team captain (and MVP later on).

And so it went on…

…I had low basketball IQ.

Sure, I could shoot the ball pretty well, and I performed decent in scrimmages and one on one games… But when it came time to lace ‘em up and hit the floor for a REAL game, it felt as though things just…. Moved too fast for me…

…Like everyone else SAW things that I didn’t, and made plays that I couldn’t.

My decisions were slow on the floor, and I always felt a step or two behind everyone else.

Luckily, I found a way to speed up my decision making and increase my basketball IQ rather dramatically, and I’m going to share those solutions with you in the coming days.

But first, there’s a quick test you need to take to determine if your basketball IQ is holding you back from reaching the next level:

(Remember to be brutally honest with yourself as you answer, this is critical to your performance):

1.) In practice, does your coach ever spend time explaining a set play, but then as soon as he is done and sends you off to practice it, you forget what to do?

2.) Do you have trouble following along as he is explaining the play?

3.) Do you get your passes picked off, or the ball stolen from you often?

4.) Are you great at stealing passes, or do you struggle to anticipate quickly enough?

5.) Do you tend to wonder what the coach is thinking of you while a play is going on?

If you’ve ever struggled with these problems yourself, THE FASTEST way to improve your game will come through improving your Basketball IQ.

Most people don’t believe that you can improve your basketball IQ at all – you’re either born with it or you aren’t…

…Well, I’m here to tell you that (luckily), that’s not true.

You CAN improve your basketball IQ, you just have to use the right “cognitive training.”

This is something I can help with with, but first take that test and let me know if you need it in the first place.

So go ahead answer those 5 questions, then let me know how you tested in the comments below. I’ll be back in a day or two with a few tricks to rapidly improving your Basketball IQ!

1.) In practice, does your coach ever spend time explaining a set play, but then as soon as he is done and sends you off to practice it, you forget what to do?

    Nope

2.) Do you have trouble following along as he is explaining the play?

Only if i feel like the play isn’t really effective.

3.) Do you get your passes picked off, or the ball stolen from you often?

Usually my passes might get picked off at least once a game, but lately i’ve been able to be more patient with the ball and better decision making in passing since i got Effective Ballhandling.
4.) Are you great at stealing passes, or do you struggle to anticipate quickly enough?

I’m not great at stealing passes, but i think it’s only because i don’t have very quick and explosive feet. it might also be the quickness of my anticipation too. im not sure.

5.) Do you tend to wonder what the coach is thinking of you while a play is going on?

This is what i do all the time. everytime a sub comes in from our team, i always wonder if they are going to sub me out.

    1) YES, all the time.
    2) Yes, but i think its because i lose concentration by something else half-way through.
    3) I only really have one bad pass per game usually.
    4) I made my own method for stealing passes that works well.(along with dominate on defense’ help of course)
    5) I always wonder what the coach is thinking about me, i seem to think he is constantly judging me.

I am not able to give objective answers because I am not a professional basketball player. I’ve been in real basketball club only for half an year or so…

    * I was stealing much
    * I was comprehending everything explained to me PROVIDED THAT:
    – I was understanding it at that time…simply because I do not understand the game of basketball in such detail, this is something I’m working on – reading, watching, becoming student of the game.

Basically I think I am far from the worst case of No Basketball IQ, but the ceiling has to be limitless so I would be very happy to be given some tips on improving this. Looking forward !

    1) no, I always remember the plays, even the position i’m not playing(eg. SF, PF, C)
    2) no, i can always follow what the coaches say unless they speak another language i dun know.
    3) sometimes, I feel like I dun know if i should pass or “do it myself” in gametime.
    4) not many steals, but I can still make them back off a lil’ bit as they’re scared of the ball being stolen.
    5) sometimes, when making decisions, I wonder if the coach allows me to do it. However, when i dun even care the coach(something like ignoring them), I make decisions quickly and aggressively.

1.) Sometimes true. I can run the play in my position, but once she tells us to rotate to a different position I screw everything up.

2.) When she only explains it in words I can’t follow at all, if she diagrams it out or drags me through the position I understand it completely.

3.) Sometimes because I’m pretty bad at telegraphing my passes.

4.) Sometimes I can steal the ball when I’m in the right place at the right time.

5.) Only when I make a huge mistake I worry about what she’s thinking of me. When I make a great play I want to know what she’s thinking of me.

    1.) sometimes

2.) depends if it is a long play then I do struggle but try to keep summarizing how the play goes in my headto get it all straight

3.) I am careful before I pass it and look first if it’s a good pass or a or it’s a force pass that will lead to a turnover, so my passes do get picked off often and barley really do get the ball stolen

4.) actually I kind of do get a bit of steals, last game I got 2 steals

5.) sometimes because I have a feeling I could screw up and its not a good sign to the coach either

My son plays D1 basketball. He is 6’8″ 210 athletic and fast. He didn’t start playing the game until he was in high school. I feel he has not utilized his potential to the extent he could.Would like to know a little more about your program and why it is better than a myriad of programs available.

Until I received your program I never knew I could play the way I do now, score the way I do, and help my teammates score. You honestly helped me change my game, my mindset, and the way others look at me.

You gave me a confident mindset of knowing that no matter what happens in the next game I play, I have the scoring ability that will help get me to the next level and I am ready to face anyone.

Just wanted to say thanks for your training – my ball handling has improved now I can beat anyone off the dribble!

You have some of the best programs I’ve used and my game keeps getting better! I can’t wait to show up next season and shock everyone with my new game. Thank you so much!

It doesn’t matter if you are looking to make the cut for the 8th grade basketball team, or if you are looking to get a scholarship.

Basketball Renegades will have your back and is the best resource in my opinion to help you reach your basketball goals.

In my opinion as a high school player Basketball Renegades has the best training available. From the programs to the coaching, and the individualized training, it’s the best resource that I’ve ever found.

My shooting, scoring, ball handling, and athleticism have all improved greatly and I’m getting better and better with every single workout.

Taylor’s training sessions far surpassed our expectations. He customized a program that delivered quick results.

The previous season my son was just a player on his team. This year he was the “go to guy” thanks to Taylor’s teaching abilities.

If you are serious about becoming a better player then you should definitely be training with Taylor Allan!

Basketball Renegades is the place for serious players to take their game to the next level. Taylor’s training is innovative and flat-out gets results.

Taylor’s knowledge goes beyond just basketball skill training and his programs and techniques incorporate all aspects of development that players need to dominate.
