Basketball-Specific Vertical Jump Training?

Click play to watch the video…

The #1 question I’ve gotten since posting that video this summer is:

“How did you train to jump so high!”

The truth is, I didn’t always jump this high – not even close. I was born with your typical “white boy genetics” – slow, heavy footed and ground bound.

The embarrassing truth is that my vertical was only 23 inches in grade 10! Far from what you need to be an elite player.

Even when all my friends were grabbing the rim, I was the kid who was stuck just swiping the mesh.

It was so frustrating, because deep down I knew I was a better PLAYER than these guys… But my lack of explosiveness and vertical jumping ability were holding my game back.

Even more frustrating was when I actually started GAINING inches on my vertical…

I quickly realized that training your vertical jump… And training your vertical jump for BASKETBALL are two completely different things.

In most vertical jump programs, they simply train you to jump straight up and down as high as possible. That’s cool, if pure vertical is your ONLY goal.

But I’m assuming that if you’re a serious player, you want BASKETBALL SPECIFIC explosiveness and vertical jump…

The ability to fly down the lane before exploding into the air, rising higher than every helpless defender standing in your way… Before slamming it home with authority.

Once I realized this, and started training my vertical in a way that was BASKETBALL SPECIFIC, I rocketed all the way up to a 40 inch vertical leap – explosive dunks, lightning speed and power, the total package.

If THIS is the type of athleticism you want to have, here’s the truth:

Your current program is probably KILLING your vertical jump on the basketball court.

Even if you’re gaining inches, it’s HIGHLY unlikely you’ll ever see those inches transfer onto the court without the right type of basketball-specific vertical jump training.

And there’s nothing more painful than dedicating yourself to one specific goal (a huge vertical jump)… And actually ACHIEVING it after hundreds of hours of training…

And realizing that it does NOTHING to help your game.

All that training… Wasted.

Don’t let this happen to you. Every player deserves to feel the exhilarating feeling of rocketing into the air and throwing down a thunderous dunk in front of an electric home crowd.

Not everyone will get this once-in-a-lifetime feeling, and that’s a shame… Because nothing can even come close to the rush you feel after that monster dunk.

So in just a day or two, I’m going to email you our NEWEST video, “Basketball Specific Vertical Jump Training.”

It will show you why the current program you’re on is probably killing most of your explosiveness… And how to train for BASKETBALL SPECIFIC jumping ability – like this:

Imagine how it feels to dunk like this…

Not only that, I’ll announce our brand new program, Vertical Jump Formula.

My goal is for the Vertical Jump Formula program to turn you into the most feared, high-flying dunker in your area. As a Renegade member, it’s what you deserve. You’ve worked too hard, for too long.

So stay tuned… This is going to be a BIG week.

- Taylor

P.S. In the video we will also talk about increasing your vertical in-season, AND even what to do if you aren’t playing on a team this year and you want to MAX OUT your vertical for next years tryouts. Plus, some more cool highlights – like these:

How high are you jumping now? How many inches did you gain in total?

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

Somewhere around 36 standing, 39 running. It’s gone down a bit this fall because I’m focused more on physique goals right now instead of vertical, and I’ve gained 15 lbs through that style of bodybuilding training. In total, I gained 17 inches – from 23 inches to 40.1 inches (measured on a jump mat).

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

Yes, you can use VJF year round. We have different programs for each season and level of player. The average results are 8-12 inch gains on athletes I train IN PERSON. I haven’t shared my vertical jump programs online, so we are only going by the results I’ve gotten with in-person clients. If you take it seriously, you will get the same results.

No, you won’t gain 8-12 inches in-season. That won’t happen with ANY program, unless you’re not getting any playing time during games (in which case you could basically train like you do in the offseason).

This is exactly what happened to me. I can actually reach 11’3 and i can hit my head on the backboard, yet dunking is not consistent, so it is kind of worthless. Also, the training hasn’t transferred to my game much.
This is exactly what i need.

That’s your decision. VJF in season training is more vertical-jump specific so a bit more advanced, while In Season Secrets is more all encompassing. Feel free to use the VJF in-season program with the ISS skill workouts.

Hey I have a quick Vertical jump training question. are Olympic lifting exercises like: snatch, clean, jerk, important and/or effective for increasing your vertical jump? Do you think your vertical jump program will get someone to a 45-48inch vertical? Very exited to get you program.

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

Oly lifts are great. Just not 100% necessarry. You can still accomplish the same results with other movements that aren’t as complex. Most taller players have trouble with them as well. But if you can do them perfectly, go for it.

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

One of my clients this summer, Joe, started with a 23.5 inch standing vertical Jump Mat measured. He had 6 weeks to train and got to 30 inches by the time he left for training camp. So that’s a similar scenario to compare.

    Hey Taylor,

Thanks for putting out another great program. I’ve got a few quick questions.

    1. Since I have access to only limited equipment (dumbbells but not barbells), can I mix in-season and body weight workouts? Or should I just stick with the body weight workouts?

    2. If I have practices 4-6 days a week, but no games, should I do VJF in-season workouts, or should I wait until off-season to do the main workouts to maximize results? (Will doing in-season affect my results for off-season workouts?)

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

Depends how intense practices are. The only thing you can do is try and see if you can recover and make gains. A lot of teams practices are pretty tame, so you might be able to get away with it. On the other hand, I could never have done it in high school the way we practiced. So you gotta be the judge on this one.

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

That’s highly unlikely with ANY program or any style of training. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. You would have to add 3-5 inches just from technique gains, and then really dial everything perfectly in when you trained. You’re basically asking for 2 inches every single week, which is beyond what our body can naturally generate.

I am only 12 years old? I have measured my vertical now from about 26-28 inches and a can touch the net. I am 5 foot 1 or 2. Would you recommend the product to me?
    Thanks

    Taylor Reply:

Yes, use the “Young Guns” program which is designed for age 10 and up. There are no weights involved. This will really set you up for massive success in the future.

Cool! looking forward but I was also wondering how much results I would get. Would using the “Young Guns” program give me less results than the normal program?
    Thanks

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

No. If you qualify for the young guns program, that is the program that will give you the best results. We’ve fine tuned it so that the exact program you SHOULD be using is the one that will get you maximum results for your individual type.

I used to be able to dunk in my teens and 20′s but now it seems my veritcle has been reduce to nothing. Is this a program that I can do and should I be concerned about any knee injuries whule training?

As long as you don’t have any current structural issues or tears, and everything is healed, VJF will actually decrease your knee pain because of muscle patterns and balance and movement patterns. This program was the biggest reason I cured my own knee pain back in high school.

Hey Taylor I’ve been checking out your Youtube and everything you’ve made since the 6th grade. I’m now in 8th grade and I’m so glad that you are doing this vertical jump thing. From doing other manuals I can already tell what will be in this and I can assure anyone reading this that you can gain at least 12 inches in 3 weeks. I used to not be able to jump at all and was the slowest in my grade. After this kind of jump training that I did in other manuals I had a 25 inch vertical at 12 years old and was almost the fastest in my grade. Trust Taylor when he makes this because I personally am a huge fan of him and know that this will be good. I don’t want to give out too much information because Taylor is selling this but what you learn will also improve all of your basketball skills because of the explosiveness that I am guessing Taylor is going to teach. I quit basketball for a while, because of family issues. Whenever I see one of Taylor’s videos or books it makes me want to be in the NBA. It gives me determination. I hope that anyone who buys this will get that determination and appreciate Taylor like I appreciate him.

    Hey Taylor,

I’m 15, 5 ’3 and have a 15 inch running vertical with no prior training. I can’t touch the net on a basketball hoop. I’ll probably grow to around 5 ’8-’10. I’ve been told my whole life that a person with my genetics cannot dunk. I’ve heard it from my peers, coaches, even from my mum, but I never once bought it. I still believe I can dunk but I’m starting to feel a little doubtful of myself. Do you think someone with my horrible genetics can dunk? I’m willing to work as hard as is necessary and my ultimate goal is to play professionally in the NBA. I have big dreams, but the foundation of these dreams, my belief in myself, is a bit shaky right now due to continued exposure to negativity from others.

Can you give me your honest opinion as a basketball trainer, coach and mentor as to whether I’ll be able to dunk if I work my hardest and don’t get injured at all? If I hear the word ‘yes’ from you, I’ll never so much as slightly doubt myself as I know you’re a top class coach. I know it from having purchased your previous programs. What do you think Taylor?

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

One of my players, Mike, just had a put back dunk in his game a few weeks back. He’s 5’9″. So yes, you can do it. It just takes the right training. Never ever let anyone tell you otherwise. If you want it, take it.

    Dear Coach Taylor,

When I go to the gym to do all my workouts it takes me much more than 90 minutes from the BHM, to the SC, to the PS, all the way down to the conditioning part of the workout. I unfortunately got cut from my JV team this year and I am a sophomore using this as an opportunity to train the right way. Is there any way to make my workout last 1.5-2 hours instead of 2-3 hours? Can I also do my physical warm up in the morning instead of before my workouts or will it last that long? Hey Taylor,

I’m on the third week of your Vertical Jump Formula, and I’ve already gained 2 inches on my 2 step AND 1 step vertical jump; your expertise in fitness amazes me.

I have a quick and very important question though if you could please help me out.

I was looking ahead in the program, and I was wondering about the weighted work in Phase 2. You said the purpose of phase 2 was to gain a little size, but mainly a lot of strength.

With this in mind, how long should I rest between sets for a typical exercise like “Back Squats 3 x 5″ or “Dumbbell Bench Press 3 x 8″? I read an article that said 3-5 minute rests are more for power lifters who are trying to increase their explosiveness. Does this apply to strength too? Should I apply these 3-5 minute rests to Back Squats only or to all of the weighted exercises? Or, am I suppose to rest for a less amount of time to encourage hypertrophy from certain exercises, which is the process of my muscles getting bigger because of the constant stress from little amounts of rest between sets? Am I supposed to make sure I’m fully rested for the next set?

I’m not trying to get too big; my main focus is to get stronger without gaining too much size and weight (I’m primarily a point guard/secondarily a shooting guard).

Please let me know which option is the best, and thanks a lot for your time.

    P.S. – here’s the link of the article I read: http://worldfitnessnetwork.com/rest-between-sets/

Until I received your program I never knew I could play the way I do now, score the way I do, and help my teammates score. You honestly helped me change my game, my mindset, and the way others look at me.

You gave me a confident mindset of knowing that no matter what happens in the next game I play, I have the scoring ability that will help get me to the next level and I am ready to face anyone.

Just wanted to say thanks for your training – my ball handling has improved now I can beat anyone off the dribble!

You have some of the best programs I’ve used and my game keeps getting better! I can’t wait to show up next season and shock everyone with my new game. Thank you so much!

It doesn’t matter if you are looking to make the cut for the 8th grade basketball team, or if you are looking to get a scholarship.

Basketball Renegades will have your back and is the best resource in my opinion to help you reach your basketball goals.

In my opinion as a high school player Basketball Renegades has the best training available. From the programs to the coaching, and the individualized training, it’s the best resource that I’ve ever found.

My shooting, scoring, ball handling, and athleticism have all improved greatly and I’m getting better and better with every single workout.

Taylor’s training sessions far surpassed our expectations. He customized a program that delivered quick results.

The previous season my son was just a player on his team. This year he was the “go to guy” thanks to Taylor’s teaching abilities.

If you are serious about becoming a better player then you should definitely be training with Taylor Allan!

Basketball Renegades is the place for serious players to take their game to the next level. Taylor’s training is innovative and flat-out gets results.

Taylor’s knowledge goes beyond just basketball skill training and his programs and techniques incorporate all aspects of development that players need to dominate.
