How To Strategically “PEAK” For The 2010-2011 Basketball Season

In grade 11, I made a critical mistake.

See, for the first time I honestly felt like I had my training completely dialed in all offseason long… From April to August – perfect.

I had my sights set on coming in and dominating that year… Being team captain, winning the league MVP award, leading scorer… The works.

Maybe I wanted it a little TOO much… I thought that because I’d done so well all summer, I could push even harder during the September and October pre-season, and come into tryouts with guns a’blazing.

Didn’t quite happen like that.

I ended up getting completely run into the ground, and had the worst series of tryouts in my entire life… Despite being in “the best shape of my life.”

A week later, the team captain was named, and it wasn’t me.

In our first exhibition game, I barely cracked double digits in scoring.

The first impression I made with my coach that season was NOT that I’d trained harder than everyone all offseason… It was that I’d come in un-prepared and un-focused.

All because I messed up my pre-season training.

You can probably guess what happened next…

The negative momentum kept on building, and by the end of the year I was in the shadow of players who didn’t work nearly as hard as I did during the summer.

My season was ruined, and I was beyond disgusted in myself.

It was then that I finally learned the truth:

Your pre-season training will MAKE OR BREAK your entire season. For many players, it is EVEN MORE important than your offseason training!

More than that… A bad start to your season (beginning in tryouts) will cause almost irreversible damage. More often than not, a bad start leads to a bad year.

That’s what happened to me in grade 11.

Luckily, the next year I didn’t make the same mistake.

I began studying how Olympic athletes “peak” for their competitions… How they basically GUARANTEE that they perform at 110% of their potential when it really matters.

I found out that they use a strategic approach called “Wave Loading” that ramps up your skill, athleticism, and conditioning without burning you out…

…And can easily be programmed to have you playing at 110% come day 1.

Which means:

You establish yourself as the star player from DAY 1 of your season

You make an incredible first impression on your coach (“Wow, he must have worked HARD this offseason!”)

You rapidly gain momentum that carries you into the rest of your season

You have your best season ever.

But… As you can imagine, this is a pretty complex process.

To make wave loading work, you really need to know exactly how to sequence the workouts and the training so that you peak PERFECTLY for your season.

Over the past few years I’ve tested and perfected this sequence with not only myself, but dozens of players who have gone on to dominate all year long.

And for the first time ever, I’m going to be releasing the entire step-by-step process in our brand new “Pre-Season Peaking Program.”

This will bring together the entire Wave Loading process, and peak your skill levels and conditioning perfectly for your season. No more guess work, no more GAMBLING with your training – we all know it’s do or die time right now.

Every workout, every day of training is detailed with exact precision… All designed to lead up to your first tryout of the year.

The program is almost finished (we’re just putting the finishing touches on it now), and it will be available within a day or two.

Until then, I’d love to hear about your goals for this season in the comments below. Are you looking to make the team for the first time, become a starter, or maybe be the MVP of your team or league? Let me know and I’ll see if I can help you get there.

Talk to you down below,

Taylor

I’m in the 11th grade and I have became serious with basketball very late, I want to be starter, MVP and this will be my first year playing for the school, I’m working hard because people tell me I can make it, but I want to know that I will make. But I think as of right now I have a chance

Completely agree with this. Its not about the off-season but more about the preseason. I usually use the off season to prepare mentally and to decide what I need to work on come the preseason. I remember one year where in the off season I couldn’t miss a shot. Kids that i played with from my school looked at me like i was possessed due to my improvement. Come the preseason and school i didn’t have much time as in the off season and my game kinda fell apart and come tryouts I was much worse.

You’d be surprised how often that happens – it’s all about peaking during the pre-season. Can’t let it fall apart!

You got it – you’ll be shocked at how well you can really do against varsity players – the jump isn’t as hard as people say it is. Just prepare and make it happen. Be the best shooter on the floor and it won’t matter nearly as much how big they are.

Hey taylor, this seems awesome. I have some training questions though. Long story short i messed up my offseason and started too late. I just finished the elite phase of BHM and phase 1 of PS and i feel great. Tryouts are in 2 weeks and im wondering if i should continue and do the Mastery program for ball handling and phase 2 of PS or should i start doing the power hour workout? Or even your preseason program. Lastly, what do you mean by preseason? is it the period before tryouts or before the actual season? Because for the team in my area the tryouts are a month or 2 before the season, but during that time , even though there are no games, there will still be practices. Is your preseason program for that or for just before tryouts?
    Thanks

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

There are 3 phases in the Preseason Peaking Program. Phase 1 is loading, phase 2 is deloading, phase 3 is peaking. You should skip the first two and go straight to the peaking phase if you’re on a tight schedule. The program is adaptable to almost all schedules.

    [Reply]

    Tony Reply:

ill probably get your program, but if i dont, should i continue doing the main programs(prolific shooting, ball handling mastery), or should i start the power hour workout?

    [Reply]

    Tony Reply:

and to your reply, as i said before tryouts are about a month before the actual season, so would i repeat the preseason peaking program after tryouts?

    Taylor Reply:

Nope. You’ll be into in-season training then. The training you do during that time needs to fit with your gruelling practice and exhibition schedule.

    Taylor Reply:

Probably start the Power Hour workout, unless you’re almost done (2-3 more weeks) of PSP and BHM

That sounds very familiar. I play in the NAIA and we started unofficial practice 3 weeks ago, and I worked extremely hard all off season, felt like I was in the best shape of my life, and then bombed my first few days of practice. I played NCAA DIII last year and shot 60% from the 3, which is what got me here, and I’ve probably shot 2-30 in the last 3 weeks. My coach is not impressed. My defense is what’s keeping me around, but as a 2 guard and the only legit 3 point threat on the team I really need to turn it up offensively if I want to get on the court. 2 questions

    1) How hard is it to change a coach’s mind about your offensive ability after a bad start?

    2) Do you think your program sounds right for where I am in the season?

    [Reply]

Hey Taylor, I probably don’t have the money to get this program until Christmas but in case I do should I stop prolific shooting and bhm or finish them because I am halfway through the 3rd phase for the 2nd time (had to restart program from 2nd phase because of injury to shooting elbow) and halfway through the elite phase of bhm. I really want to start at pg on varsity this year and be the number one pg in the nation for class of 2014 going into next year so I can eventually become a perennial NBA all-star. I’m also doing the jump manual and like half an inch away from dunking (I’m 5’10). And off topic, I sent my Scoring Secrets Elite response twice last month and never got a response, I was just wondering if I’d ever get those questions answered? Please help me, thanks. Oh, and my open gyms start in October and tryouts are like the beginning of November

The job is done and now I am learning all stuff from the Scoring Secrets. The first game is in 3 weeks from now so hopefully I will be ready to be the best scorer in the league. I know I can do that but something is still missing in my game I mean in practice I do not feel that I have to dominate against my teammates. I can dominate in the pickup games of 3 on 3 but I can not dominate against my teammates in 5 on 5. I think it is wrong. What to do with that?

    Hey Taylor,

What happens if we are already doing tryouts and our coach is really focusing on conditioning? We have been going for 3 weeks and he has cut the team down to 25 players and will cut more next week. Will this program work while we are conditioning 5 days a week? I love to workout and get ready for ball, but I don’t want to overtrain and kill my results.

    Thanks!
    Austin

    [Reply]

    Taylor Reply:

In that case, it’s probably not the right time for you to do the program. If your coach is anything like my old high school coach, you won’t be able to do much quality training after all the conditioning is over. Unfortunately. But as always – team stuff comes first. Just try to do more stationary drills, nothing hardcore. Keep the workouts under 40 minutes.

    Taylor Reply:

Well we produce products here, so I may be biased, but I’ll also say this: Before I ever ran this business I spent every dollar I had on new training materials and coaches. It was that important to me. I use the analogy that if your game is worth zero dollars to you, you shouldn’t spend any money on it.

As for the DVD thing, you won’t get anything out of watching a DVD. But you’ll improve dramatically when you use step by step TRAINING PROGRAMS and watch those DVDs and get out there and USE the information.

There’s really no replacement for learning and investing in your game, and I’m not saying that because we product products. You wouldn’t go to university and never buy a textbook.
